Matanuska Glacier

The Matanuska Glacier is in the Mat-su valley in Alaska. Some of these images were published in the Viewfinder, Volume 50, No 4 of the International Leica Society (LHSA).

The Matanuska Glacier is in equilibrium as of 2017. This means the rate of new ice generation is equal to the rate of loss to melting. This valley glacier pushes rock and sediment up from the valley floor to the top of the ice, causing the black streaks in the ice. The glacier is about 23 miles long by 4 miles wide.
