Iceland

I had the incredible opportunity to photograph so many incredible places in Iceland during August 2018. I am publishing a book that talks about this land of fairy tail landscapes and have published two articles. Read the second published article, Southern Iceland - Learning New Photography Skills and the first article, Iceland's Summertime Auroras.

Landmannalauger

Landmannalauger

Landmannalauger in Iceland is an incredible location located beside the dark black Laugahraun lava field from 1477. Landmannalauger is an area full of colors - red, pink, green, blue and golden yellows - resulting from the rhyolite mountains in the area. Wide open areas formed by glaciers are surrounded by high sculptured peaks. Camping is common here in the summer to enjoy some of the natural geothermal springs.

Along the F208

Along the F208

The Highlands in Iceland has one route labeled the F208. There are vast valleys full of rivers that change their volume based on the time of year. Surrounded by beautiful and goelogically varied mountains, the sun provides some incredible lighting. The grasses draw the sheep during the summer months before the owenrs take them home for the winter. Common in Iceland, the sheep wander where they want until the cold sets in.

Eldhraun Lava Field

Eldhraun Lava Field

Eldhraun Lava Field contains lava formations from the Laki volcano eruption in 1783 that some believe contributed to the French Revolution. Over 9,000 people and most of the livestock were killed in Iceland from this eruption or ensuing ash clouds. Crops were destroyed and many more perished from starvation. The estimated 42 billion tons of basalt lava and gasses released caused ash clouds that were carried by wind to Great Britain and Europe. These areas also lost crops and livestocks resulting in food shortages. The mosses covering this lava rock can take decades to grow back if stepped on and killed. Such is the fragility of a beautiful reminder of such destruction.
