Puerto Rico - Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Named in honor of Spain's King Philip II, the beginnings of this fort were about 1540. The structure has been added to over the years and has been used during various wars throughout history. In 1898 the Spanish gave Puerto Rico to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris. One of the distinguishing features of this time is the various Garitas surrounding the fort. Part of the outer walls, these sentry boxes have become an icon of Puerto Rico.
